  1. Love That Dog
I think the theme of this novel is to never give up. In the book Jack begins saying he does not like poetry and that only girls may write it. Then towards the middle of the book his teacher Miss Stretchberry convinces him that his artwork is good and he allows her to type some of it and put it on the bored for others to see as long as it does not have his name on it. Then Jack writes a letter to Mr Walter Cean Meyer his favorite author and asks him to come and visit his school. So you can see through out the book Jack gradualy becomes a bigger fan of poetry. So if jack had given up and just thought that poetry was a girl thing he never would have relized how much fun it could be.

  2. I think there are a couple of themes for the book, Reaching for Sun. One of them is, special ed kids are no different than normal ones. Josie was born with cerebral palsy and everyone treated her badly. She had to do several therepy sessions and go to OT and speech classes at school. Only one person looked at her like she was a normal kid. That was Jordan. Other people looked down upon them as the "genius and the 'tard." Josie was able to act like a regular kid around him and she enjoyed it. I think i remember her stating it as if he was oblivious to her disability.
Another theme I have is to not lie. When I read this story I thought about how much Josie wouldn't of had to go through with if she just would have told her mom that she didn't want to go. Instead she went around her mom and skipped her summer therapy camp thing. She lied to everyone about. She told Jordan and her Granny that it got out early and she told her mom that she went and liked it. Until one rainy day when the camp called home and her gran picked up the phone. Then everyone knew the truth, but her mom. Jordan was really upset because he doesn't have a mom. Jordan told Josie that if he had a mom, he wouldn't of lied to her. Gran told Josie she had to tell her mom herself. Josie didn't end up telling her mom until after her gran had a stroke in the hospital. Her whole left side of her body was paralized.

  3. In the book, One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies, I believe that the theme is that 'No matter how bad things might seem, you should never give up because they will always get better'. In the beginning of this book, Ruby is forced to move to LA to be with her dad after her mom died. She had to leave her best friend, her boyfriend, and her entire life behind. She is determined to hate her dad for not caring about her and all of LA in general. Ruby's life gets steadily worse. Her boyfriend dumped her for her best friend and she simply doesn't fit in at her new school. Eventually though, Ruby realizes that her life isn't that bad and that her dad really does care about her. She even gets the lead role in the school play and gets the most popular guy in school as her new boyfriend. This illustrates this theme because Ruby went through many hard times and she has wanted to just give up a lot. However, she kept trudging on and her life became even better than it had been before. She realized who really cared about her and what was really important. That's why I think that the theme in this book is to 'Never give up, no matter how bad things get because they will always get better'.

  4. In "Witness", the theme is that everyone one is really the same inside, and that we can't let racism and hatred get in the way of really knowing someone. It's about not letting falsely based stereotypes substitute for a person's personality. Also, it shows how much hatred can hurt people. Lenora and Esther's lives are greatly effected, and they live in fear of the Klan. The lives of the people filled with hate are ruined, too, because of all the blood they have on their hands, and the fear and pressure they have on them. The killings and racism slowly corrupt them, causing them to hurt more people and live in constant guilt.

  5. I think the theme of Heartbeat is you have to look at whats on the inside. Throughout the book, Annie is discovering who she really is and who her friends and family really are. She also draws the apple until it disappears little by little as it's being eaten. Finally she gets down to the last seed, what's really on the inside.

  6. The novel "What My Mother Doesn't Know" has a heck of a complexed theme, but here's what I think it's... It is that it is okay to go out of your leauge to date somebody. Our main character went out with two other people untill she found out that Murphy was her man. And Murphy at their shcool classify him as a general weirdo. So, that's why I think that the theme is that it is okay to date people out of your league.

I read the book "Tropical Secrets: Holocaust Regugees in Cuba". In this book, a boy named Daniel is struggling to adapt to life in a new and strange place. I believe the theme of this novel is you have the ability to chose how you want to live your life. When Daniel first comes to Cuba, he is depressed and keeps to himself. The horrors of the Holocaust were still fresh in his mind. As the story progresses, he starts to warm up to the island and make the best of his time there. This theme is also true for another character in the book named Paloma. Her father is very powerful in their country. She has always kept secrets and kept quiet about things that were happening. She was able to live a better life after she decided to confide in a few people about what was going on. Everyone in this story was able to chose how they wanted to live their life.

  8. I read the book Zorgamazoo by Robert Paul Weston. I think the theme of this book is never be afraid to try something new. One of the main characters of the book is Morty. Morty is a creature called a Zorgle. His dad was a daredevil and adventurer, but Morty doesn't like taking risks. When he gets chosen to go on a quest to find some missing creatures, he doesn't think he's right for the job. His dad convinces him to go on the quest, and Morty soon discovers that he is more qualified for the job than he thought. With the help of a young girl named Katrina, Morty rescues the missing creatures and finds out that he really is just as brave as his dad.

  9. I just finished reading The Trial and I believe that the theme is that you can never be sure of what you want. Katie Leigh experiences this throughout the book. She is tired of her quiet town and wishes that something exiting could happen. When Bruno Richard Hauptmann's trial takes place in her town, she gets tired of being in a crowded courtroom and having journalists and news reporters everywhere. She just wishes that everything could go back to normal. She has always dreamed of being a reporter, but after going to the trial, she isn't sure if that is really what she wants to do when she grows up. When her mother starts dating Mr. Griffin, she has a very negative outlook on the situation. Once she sees how happy her mom is with him, she decides that it is okay for him to be her new dad. In the end, Katie Leigh learns that you can never be sure of what you want.

  10. I think the theme of my novel is that when everybody is doing something that you know is wrong, but yet you do nothing to stop it, you're just as bad as them. Or if you join in on the wrong-doings, you're as bad as one of them. If you know something is wrong, you shouldn't let anybody talk you into doing it either. In my book, Iris Weaver said:
"senator greene sent a letter to the press
    urging every man and woman
to get out and vote for coolidge and dawes.
well, i would have cast my vote without being told.
women have waited far too long for the vote
to stay out of it now.
but i'll vote for the man i choose.
i don't need anyone, not even senator greene,
    telling me waht to think."
Iris Weaver knew what she wanted and wouldn't let anybody push or sway her. Reynard Alexander said, "the ku klux klan must go." He knew what they were doing was wrong but he didn't do anything to stop it.

  11. I am reading the book Street Love by Walter Dean Myers. I believe that the theme of this novel is to follow your dreams and what you believe in. In this book, the main character, Damian, loves a girl named Junice. Junice's mother is handed around 25 years in prison, and Junice cannot just stay with her grandmother. In the end of the novel Junice has to take a bus to Tennessee to find a place to stay. Damian loves her so much that he gets on the bus with her and leaves his family. This truly shows love, even if this may have not been the smartest thing to do. Damian trusted his gut and followed who he loved.

  12. I have finshed the novel Steet Love. I think that the theme of the story is "People who are born into inner city poverty have the feeling that their life is predetermined and there is no escape to a better life." One of the examples from the text to support this is " When my grandmother called her friend to come to see the new baby and no one was home Everything was already determined The steps are there, we just have to follow them to what ever doom there is" Another example from the text is " I want tho raise my sister and and break the chains that bind us even though I know that the chains cannot be broken"

  13. Stop Pretending

I think the theme of this novel is sad and confused. The main character, a girl who is about 12-13, is trying to figure out why her older sister is suddenly mentally unstable. She is also trying to figure out what she can do to cope with it, and who she can confide in. It combines normal events within a teenager's life with a part of some people's lives that we personally may not have to deal with

  14. I read Hugging the Rock by Susan Taylor Brown. I think the theme of this book is to make the best of what you have. The main character, Rachel's, mom left her and her dad, and she didn't know why. It took her a long time to realize that she was probably better off without her mom anyway. In the story, her mom only called her because Rachel's dad paid her to. This was devastating for Rachel at first but then she realized that she didn't want her mom to call if she really didn't want to. Rachel wasn't very close with her dad before her mom left. In the book, it said her and her father didn't even hug or hold hands! After they started talking about Rachel's mom and how it affected both of them, they became much closer and liked their bonding time.

I believe the theme of this story is learning to pick up the pieces of your life and move on. When Boy dies Sissy is devastated. She doesn't have the drive to do anything anymore. All their life Boy and Sissy had been told that they were no better than garbage. The only thing keeping them going was each other. She shuts out her family and takes to living on the streets. Instead of attempting to move up in society and climb higher she becomes what she used to laugh at, a homeless person on the streets. She changes when he beloved sister Raynell comes back to St. Louis to visit her. She tells her that Boy wouldn't want her to give up. He would want her to keep climbing. After their talk Sissy realizes that leaving St. Louis is not leaving her brother behind, it's allowing him to live through her.

  16. The theme of my book is that things in the past have already happened and it is time to move on. Also that you can still like some things you did in the past however there is always room for improvement and trying new things. For example, in the book Jack hates cats in the beginning but by the end he has a cat and loves his cat a lot. Having a cat really changed his mind about cats in general and he still loves poetry, so in a way he also doesn't change.

  17. I believe the theme of my novel is ," Don't assume things will always be the same." First, I think this because Sophie's cousin Colleen is very rude when she and her family visit the summer house. Colleen gives Sophie the cold shoulder and slim, commmunicates with her. Last summer, Colleen and Sophie got along and talked all the time but, Sophie just thinks Colleen is going through a growing stage. Second, Tammy is bigger and smarter than she was last summer. This is different because Tammy didn't talk or get into Sophies stuff as much as she did this time at the summer house.

  18. I believe the theme of One of those Hideous Books Where the MOther Dies, is to not judge something or someone. You may hate your life but that doesn't mean you need to hate everything in it. I believe this is theme because Ruby is so upset with her life she won't even try to let in her own fater. In the end how ever she askes herself how she ever hated California and palm trees.

  19. I believe the theme of this novel is that you should tolerate, even cherish, diversity. Instead of looking at someone who is different with disdain, you should look at them with respect. The novel says (page 147) “And though in numbers we perhaps are few, I know we send a message loud and clear: we now leave legacy of our own, that we have done our part to show the world that hate and shameful pride must cease to be.” Also, the novel says (page 150) “I know my struggle is not over. It is a struggle which will continue as long as people see others as different. But I know I have made a difference. And I know I am no longer alone.” In conclusion, I think the theme of this novel is that you should be sure to be tolerant and respectful of other cultures and people.

  20. I think the theme of my novel, "Shark Girl", is to never give up even when life gets hard. I think this because in the book Jane, the main character, loses her right arm in a shark attack. It is really hard for her to cope with losing it. For example, she can't tie her own shoe laces. Instead of letting this get her down (well, it does get her down for awhile, but she eventually overcomes it) she pushes on and focuses on the positives in her life! Also, at first Jane can't cook because of her arm, but she practices and eventually learns how to cook even without an arm. That is why I think the theme of "Shark Girl" is to never give up in life, even when it gets tough!

  21. I really liked my book that I read. It is called "Song of the Sparrow." I believe that the theme of the whole story was that you don't find love, love finds you. I think this is the theme of the story because Elaine believes through out most of the story that she has always been in love with Lancelot. When she finally mentions it to him, he tells her how he has only thought of her as a little girl and that he does not have the same feelings for her as she has for him. She is devastated by what she hears but in the end she realizes that she has never really loved Lancelot. She finally comes to realize that she has always loved Tristan and that Tristan has always loved her. The ending is the best part because Tristan tells Elaine how he feels and that is when she realizes that she feels the same. That is why I think that is the theme of the story.

  22. I think that the theme of this novel is that no matter how bleak things look, it is still possible to get through them. Even though Jane only had her left arm and was so incredibly hopeless at the beginning, towards the end she was living a happier, almost normal life. This huge inconvenience came with little obstacles along the way. One of these obstacles was the fact that she was once a great artist, but now Jane only had her weak hand. "But I try again and make a circle-shaky, feathery, crooked-but a circle." Even though she could never be as good as she once was, she had the hope to make progress which helped her overcome. She also loved to cook. She bought cooking utensils designed to make her one handed cooking technique easier. All these little challenges added up but little by little, she gained her life back. This means that if shark girl can overcome having one arm, anyone else can overcome their challenges in life little by little.

I think the theme of What Mt Mother Doesn't Know is finding yourself and other people. Figuring out feelingsand how to not confuse them. On the back summary it says it's hard to figure out the difference between love and lust for her. Also, that just because other people do this or don't like that you shouldn't follow and decide what's right for you.

  24. The theme os What my Mother Doesn't Know is that the best things in life are things you wait for, not what you chase after. For example, in the book she kept on complaining about how her mother doesn't do this and that and when she complained about how she needed a boyfriend.

  25. I am not entirely positive that All the Broken Pieces has a theme. If there is a theme, it might be 'always keep moving on'. For example, Matt (the main character) manages to move past his life in Vietnam. He does not forget, and plans on finding his mom and his brother eventually. He also faces discrimination from kids on his baseball team. He does well during games, despite the insults from one kid in particular. This is why I belive the theme is 'always keep moving on'

  26. I believe the theme of Street Love is always be true to your heart. In Street Love Damien falls head over heals for . The two of them get to know each other well. When mother goes to prison for selling drugs. Goes to live with her grandmother and is eventually forced into child services with her sister. When this happens she decides to run to family in to avoid being separated from her sister. Damien gets on the bus with her and the two of them decide to get married and live together. This is why I think the theme of Street Love is to always be true to your heart.

  27. The book I read was "Hate That Cat". I believe the theme of my book was to not judge someone, just because people similar to them may not be the best people. I believe this because in the book, the main character tells of how he hates the big, fat black cat that hangs around his bus stop. He especially after the cat causes him to miss the bus, by distracting him and making him climb up the tree to make the cat stop dropping nuts on him. But, the main character adopts a cat of his own. But, the boy loves this cat, proving my idea of the theme.

the theme of this novel is not to give up and work hard and you'll get what u want. I know this because the whole book shows the struggles of peoples life and some boys' basketball dreams.

  29. I just finished "Shark Girl" and I believe the theme is "just because you face a difficult obstacle in your life doesn't mean you have to give up what you love". I think this is the theme because in the story a girl named Jane gets her arm bitten off by a shark, and the doctors have to amputate the rest from her shouler down. Jane was an amzing artist and she strived to win art competitions in her school, and her community. When Jane gets faced with losing her drawing arm, she has to decide if she wants to keep going or sit there like a bump on a log and not try again. While Jane is in the hospital she tries to draw a lion, and a giraffe on gum wrappers with her left hand. Even though Jane has lost something near and dear to her, she never stops.

  30. The theme of the book, Shark Girl, is not to dwell on the past. Jane saying what if. She thinks that if she would have slowed down that day, the shark wouldn't be there when she was in the water. Also, she thinks that if it was someone else, she would have a normal life. Another theme in the book is to take one day at a time. Jane thinks too far in the future like when she wonders how she will learn how to draw again. She needed to tackle one obstacle at a time like learning how to cope without her dominant hand.

  31. I believe that the theme of "What My Mother Doesn't Know" is that you need to understand that not every feeling you feel is love. I think this becuase all throughout this book, it seems like very guy she meets a guy, that she already loves them. That's just not how it is though. Another part of that is that you have to be able to seperate your feelings and know how to deal with them.

The theme in my novel, dark sons, would probably be don't let things get to you and let you down. Just keep moving through things in your lifetime. In my book, Sam's father left him and his mother alone to go off and marry another woman. He felt betrayed and couldn't believe of what had happened. Sam was really close to his dad but things started falling apart. Later on throughout his father's and new wife's relationship, the had a baby. This action really lowered Sam's self-esteem. But the good thing was that he never gave up on himself and just tried to go through it all. At the end of the book, Sam finally goes and talks to his dad about everything that he is feeling. His father understands and they start bonding back to each other again just like the old days.

  34. I think the theme of 'Shark Girl', to never lose hope. In the beginning, Jane was sick of life. She would have rather been dead than to have to go back to school with only one arm. She is sick of the stares and the whispers. But, she doesn't give up. With the help of her brother, Michael, she gets her old life back. Maybe not exactly as it had been before, but she wasn't just moping around the house all day, whining and doing nothing. I think this shows the theme, to never lose hope.

  35. The theme of Far From you is to always let someone into your heart a little ways before kicking them out of it. If you don't truly know someone, you could lose a possible relationship in plain sight. Alice didn't want to love Victoria; she felt that Victoria was a competitor for her father's attention. When Ivy came along, all Alice saw was a tiny pink intruder in her mother's forgotten world. She hadn't gotten over her mother's death yet. Then, after being blockaded in a car from snowfall, Ali gets to know her new family. She realizes that Victoria might not be so bad after all. And, that life is to be lived with mirth, not sadness. Letting Victoria and her half sister into her heart give Ali the burning love and determination to keep Ivy alive.

  36. I think the theme of the book aleutian sparrow is "carpe diem" because you never know what will happen to the people that are close to you. One of the characters in the book dies from a bombing and she was close to the main character

  37. I think that the theme in Because I am Furniture, is that you have to stand up for what is right. Anke didn't think that she was "important enough" to have any attention at all. She wasn't even important enough to be abused. When she tries out for the volleyball team and makes it, her whole world turns upsidedown for the better. Anke makes new friends and is able to finally make herself heared, and eventually saves an innocent girls life.

  38. The book "Love that dog" had a very apparent theme to it. If it were up to me i think that the theme would be that u should never judge anyone by what you "think" they can do, but really by what they can actually accomplish themselves. I really think that this book's them was very evident when reading because he always said that "this poem is stupid" and "poems are for girls". Those are some of the reasons that I think that not judging is the main theme in this reading.

  39. Heaven Looks A Lot Like The Mall

I read Heavem Looks A Lot Like The Mall and besides being extremely funny and true, it also presented readers with a good theme. Throughout the book the main character, Tessa, goes on a review of her life. She sees everything for her first encounter with lying to her disapointing prom. Some really good examples of her low times are when she cheats on her class placement test in the end of sixth grade and when she brings some of her dad's beer to a school club to fit in. Tessa gets further and further into her life and she stars feeling like she is meant to die ( she had a dodgeball accident to get to heaven) but then when she reaches her last memory, of prom, she wakes up in a hospital and through a guide and friend realises that her past is past and that she just has to learn how to use her influences to make good decsisions and that life is worth living if you know how to use your path. I think this is the theme of the story and a really good message. I think everyone has had that point where they fall into this pattern of bad descisions and think that life is just too hard and that they're such a screw-up. Though , and I think the book really stresses this, that it's what you do at that point with your experiences that can be the deciding factor in your life.
