The Book Thief - Discussion Question #2

In the book, there are many, many instances of courage. Which act (and by whom) do you think best illustrates courage?

  1. I think that Hans's act of giving bread to the Jewish man passing my best illistrates courage. I think this because Hans knew that doing this could cause him a lot of trouble. It could very well jeopardize the life of him and his family. He would probably never be accepted in the Nazi party, and he would be a Nazi target. However, he still chose to stand up for his beliefs. He chose to attempt to help the man at his own expense. That is why I think Hans Hubberman had the best act of courage.

  2. My favorite character would defiantly have to be Rudy. I think the "lemon colored hair" kind of represents the spunk and kick Rudy has. He is a typical boy, yet he is different, too. He is safe in Nazi Germany, he has bright blue eyes and blonde hair, so it would be easy for him to just ignore the injustice, but he still thinks it is wrong to discriminate against people just because they look different. His family is very poor, but he doesn't just sit there and complain, he does something about, grant it, it is illegal, but still. He loves Liesal, and is a really good friend to her. Through all of Liesal's problems, Rudy makes her laugh, helps her through, and loves her unconditionally. That is why Rudy is by far my favorite character.

  3. I think that the Hubermans keeping Max in their basement was a huge act of courage. They knew that they could all lose their lives if anyone found out that Max was in their basement. It was especially courageous when the Nazis were looking at basements for storages and they had to hide Max in Liesel's room. Also, when Max became ill and they had to use their resources to help him get well when they had so little already. That is only one of the many ways the Hubermans showed their courage.

  4. In my opinion, the act of courage that stood out the most was Hans Huberman giving bread to the Jew because he risked getting in major trouble or even being killed. The Nazis probably wouldn't have taken time to really ask Hans what his situation was, they would either send him somewhere, or kill him. Although he kept saying that what he did was stupid and that he's an idiot, I think what he did showed that he's a truly good person and believes in fairness among every race and religion. Maybe if more people were like Hans during the Holocaust, it could have prevented many deaths.

  5. The best act of courage to me is with Hans. This is where Hans helps out max. This stands out to me because it goes against everything almost everyone in Germany believes and it goes against hitler. This is a very courageous act by anyone who helped the Jews.

  6. I think that Hans Huberman's act of courage that best illustrates courage was when he painted over the slurs on the Jewish houses. This is because this makes him have a bad reputation with the Nazis, and everybody will dislike him and not ask him to paint their house. This will hurt his bussiness and family in the future. The courage of Hans Huberman has been clearly demonstrated by his act towards the Jews. Hans treats them like any other person. This is why I think that this act clearly demonstrates courage.

  7. I think that Hans Huberman had the best act of courage by hiding Max, a Jewish man, in his home. He had enough compassion that he took in a complete stranger, even though he knew that this act would put his entire family in danger. If the Nazis ever discovered Max, it wouldn't just be the Jew that was punished. Hans and his family would be in trouble too. I think that by taking this risk, Hans Huberman demonstrated an unimaginable amount of courage. That's why I think that Hans illustrated the best act of courage.

  8. I think that Leisel Meminger definitely represents the best act of courage in this book. There are several reasons of how I can support this. First, she had no clue of how to read at all when she arrived in the Hubermann home. After several nights of reading with her new father, Hans, Leisel kept growing and growing into a fantastic reader and never gave up along the way. To get the books she read, she would steal them. Most of Leisel's books came from the mayor's home. She had the courage to sneak through an open window of the house a plethora of times and came out with a book in hand no matter what. Those are only some examples of Leisel Meminger's demonstrations of courage out of like 1,000!

    1. I do believe Leisel was extremely courages but the examples you provided, I believe, go into a different category such as perserverance and nonconformity

I think that Leslies fauthor helping out the Jjewish man is a grait examiple of courage. If he is caught then he could be killed. He is riscing deth so that he could help out his friends son.

  10. I think that Hans's act of housing Max, even though he knew that he wasn't supposed to, best illustrates courage. Hans was barely in the Nazi Party, which meant that many people still didn't trust him and to do this in spite of all that was very brave. He and his family were already in danger and if anyone had found out that Max was in the Hubermann's basement, all of them would've been killed on the spot, no questions asked. I think that Hans was very brave to hold up to a promise he made, even though he was putting his life on the line. This is why I think that this act best illustrates courage.

  11. I think the act that best illustrates courage was when Hans and Rosa Hubberman hid Max in their home. Hiding a Jew was EXTREMELY dangerous, and if a Nazi had found out that they were hiding him, they would have probably been killed! It must have been a really hard decision to take him into their basement and risk their lives, yet they did and saved his life! Not only their lives, but Liesel's as well. That, I think is really brave! How many of us would risk the lives of ourselves and our family to help someone we had met once in our lives? Not many! That is why I think Hans and Rosa Hubberman best illustrated an act of courage.

  12. I believe the best act of courage shown in this book was by Liesel. In the book, her foster dad, Hans, stepped out into a parade of Jews and handed out pieces of bread. Hans was punishd with several whips in front of Liesel. Later in the book Liesel and Rudy follow the ways of Hans and hand out pieces of bread to the Jewish. Even though she knew she would be punished and it would hurt, she carried on and fed the people. She did not support Hitler and still she was not afraid to take after Papa, in helping out Jews. She was whipped and did not regret standing in the street to make things right. That is why I think Liesel shows the best act of courage.

  13. I think the act of housing a jew by Hans Huberman was the greatest act of courage. This is because at the time was very, very illegal to house a jew. Knowing this Hans still did it because he knew it was the right thing to do as a person. This was couragous because this put Leisel in jeopardy to become an orphan again and his wife and he to be taken away! This was the greatest act of courage in the book by far!

  14. The definion of courage is "implies firmness of mind and will in the face of danger or extreme difficulty" (Merriam-Webster online dictionary). In The "Book theif", there was a TON of acts that showed courage in it. I think that Lisel's act of courage bty beating the living daylights out of the idiots bec. they were making fun of her was the best act of courage so far in the book. (I'm only on part five and half, but give credit.) I think this is the best act because she showed those boys who was boss. And, you don't see a girl beating up a guy on any given day, now don't you? Well atleast i don't... And finally, she showed them that it wasn't okay to make fun of somebody who is dumber than you. So that is my personal opinion on what was the best act of courage. Thank you.

  15. I think the greatest act of courage in the book was made by Liesel when she ran into the jewish march to get Max. I think this because during that time helping or caring for a jewish person was very bad in the eyes of many germans. She risked her and Max's life by running into the march. That's why I think she had the biggest act of courage in the book.

  16. I think the best act of courage was demonstrated by Hans when he agreed to take in Max. Everyone knew that taking in a Jew during the Holocaust was pretty much signing your name on your death certificate. If Max was found, Hans and his family would be penalized. However, Hans understood the power of a promise. He had promised his buddy that he would help his family if they needed it. When Max showed up at his doorstep, Hans could have told him to turn around and leave. Instead, he took him in with open arms, knowing full well what trouble this might cause him in the future.

  17. I think the act in the book that best illustrates courage was when Hans and Rosa Hubermann first let Max hide in their home. This would be a very hard thing to do, since hiding a Jew in your home can get you into loads of trouble. Hans and Rosa both worried a ton whenever they first started hiding Max, and they had a reason to. If you were caught with a Jew hiding in your home you could get taken away and the Jew would be sent to a concentration camp. This alone would scare you a ton and for the most part prevented people from hiding Jews. But Rosa and Hans looked past the consequences and hid Max anyway, which makes their act courageous.

  18. I think that the act that best illustrates courage is when Hans gives bread to a starving Jew during one of the marches to Dachau. Earlier, he painted over racial slurs toward the Jews and was already being watched by the Nazi party. Even after that, he gives bread to a Jew when it is certain that he will be seen by a Nazi and be punished. The Nazis will probably search his house and Max is hiding in his basement. He knows that what he is doing is wrong, but he does it anyway because he doesn't want to watch innocent people suffer. It was also a public act against Nazis which many people saw and that is why it took a lot of courage.

  19. I think that Leisel's acts of courage were shown alot throughout the book. Every time she stole a book it was out of courage. Sure stealing is bad, but she managed to save little bits and pieces of history that would have otherwise been lost in some way shape or form. I dont think that Leisel would've ended up as strong minded about being anti nazi as she was if she hadnt have stolen the shoulder shrug from the fire at Hitler's birthday party.

  20. The act where Papa displayed courage was when he went to one of the Jews in the death march through Himmel Street to give him a piece of bread. This was very courageous because he went out of his way to help out a helpless human being. Plus, the consequences for doing that were so great too.

  21. The most courageous act in this boook is when Hans gave bread to the jews marching through town. This was courageous because he would've gotten a punishment for it (which he did). He was put into the military as punishment.

  22. I think Liesel demonstrates courage when she went to Max as he was marching through her town. Liesel started shouting his name when she saw him and teh gaurd looked at her. She then went up to Max to show him that she cared and thought about him. The gaurd saw Liesel and pulled her out of the march. Liesel didn't stop. She ran up to Max again and began talking to him. The gaurd saw her once more and whipped her for talking to the Jew and whipped Max for holding up the line. Liesel would have kept going if it wasn't for Rudy who pulled her away from the scene.

  23. I think that when Leisel kept all of those letters that she wrote to her mom illistrated courage best in my mind. In the begining of the book when it said that she was saving all of those letters that she wrote to her mom and then mailed them to the foster care center really showed her perseverence. She was courageous using her Rosa's money that she earned from ironing to pay for mailing and then getting the penalty for the act. That was the best example of courage in the book in my mind.

  24. In this book there are a lot of things that happen that illustrate courage. For one Liesel being able to connect with her new foster parents is a huge accomplishment in my eyes. Learning all the things that she went through, you would think that this little girl would become weak and have little to say. However you would be wrong if you thought that. I couldn’t just pick one event that represents courage because there are just too many to write down! In the book Liesel shows courage and her personality is revealed. Her personality is courage. She steals books for the rush and then goes back to the scene of the crime to revisit the magical library she just couldn’t stop thinking about. The mayor’s wife is there and she forgives Liesel and they share a moment of realization. They remember the time Liesel went off and let her true feelings out at the mayor’s wife. It showed courage then in a way that hurt and was uncalled for. It needed to be said though. Then they remembered their apologies for one another. Which also took courage, to forgive, or to even return to the place where it all happened. Liesel showed courage in many ways throughout the book, but hey, that’s just who she revealed herself to be. After all that happened to her, she was brave and stood strong, not frightened or weak like you would assume. But that was just her personality.

  25. I think that Hans shows alot of courgage when he chose to take Max into his home. He risked getting caught by the Nazi's for helping out a Jewish man. Han's also gives bread to the Jewish man. He risks getting into alot of trouble and could possibly face death, but he chooses to do it anyway because he stays true to his beliefs and morals. HaliR2
