The Book Thief - Discussion Question #3

In the novel, words have the power to both detroy and save lives. Discuss, giving examples of both sides.

  1. Hitler's words had the power to destroy lives. It was his words, and his alone, that started the mass murder of Jews in Europe. With each word he spoke, Hitler gained power. He continued to give speeches and promote his ideas until he had millions of people absorbing his every word. You would think that this would be enough for one man, but he planned to continue to influence the minds of men, women, and children until he controlled the entire world. In the book, people like Max and Liesel and Hans have the power to save lives. They were the few people who were unafraid to speak out against evil. They were not influenced by Hitler's "perfect" ideals. Instead, they chose to believe their own way. Liesel calmed a whole basement full of people during an air raid by reading to them from a book. Max wrote stories that helped inspire Liesel to write her own. I think that Hans and Max were the people who kept Liesel sane for all those years of war. They protected her, cared for her, and taught her that it's okay to be different.

  2. Words have a power to give life to a ten year old girl in a basement and take the fear and nightmares away. It gives her hope throughout the holocaust and brings her joy every time she completes another book. Words that came from "The Word Shaker" and "The Stand Over Man" But words have another power as well. Words have the power to take the life it created and destroy it. Take it from its high place in life to the lowest point life can give you. They have the power to take a Jewish fist fighter into a simple boy in a concentration camp. To put someone in so much fear that they would hide in a basement and for months not see the outside. Words have the power of creation and destruction. This is a simple fact that I have accepted thanks to this book.

  3. Words destroy lives by hurting and mistreating others and causing people to believe things that are not true. One example of how words destroy lives in "The Book Thief" is how Hitler fills the minds of the world with the idea that Jewish people are evil and should be hated. If he had never opened his mouth to tell such lies, the entire war and merciless killings could have been avoided. Another example of destruction by words is when Nazi supporters painted awful phrases on the homes and shops of the Jewish. Their words hurt, gave people incorrect thoughts, and would not easily go away. Only such people as Hans Hubermann had the sense of dignity and compassion to help those who needed it, and wipe away the nasty words from the world. On the other side, words save lives in this book by providing an outlet for people who were believed to be too far gone to save. They reach into the hearts of others and provide what nothing else could. One way that words save lives in this novel is when Hans Hubermann has to go write letters in the war. He had not intended to take the job, but his friend volunteered him for it. Hans would have died that day if he had not instead been saved by writing words. Finally, the most important example of how words save lives is when they save Liesel. Liesel was writing the story of her life, "The Book Thief", in the basement when the bombs hit her neighborhood. She was the only one on the street that survived. Words have a very strong sense of symbolism and meaning in this book.

  4. In the Novel, an example of when words can save lives is at the end when Liesel avoids the bomb because she is busy writing in her basement. These words occupied her time long enough for her to escape death. Another example of how words can save lives, although not quite literally, is when Liesel reads books to the people of Molching that are hiding in the bomb shelter during the air raids. This doesn’t exactly save their lives, but it helps the people in the basement relax and think about things other than the air raids. An example of how words can destroy lives is when Nazi propaganda is used, making people despise others. This turned people against groups like Jews. Propaganda makes people believe anything, which can both save and destroy lives.

  5. In The Book Thief, words can destroy and save lives. For instance, when Liesel reads to everyone in the bomb shelter, everyone is calmed. Before, they were very stressed and were freaking out, with Liesel reading, they were at least distracted. However, words can also hurt. Hitler came to power with words alone. He was a very powerful speaker and millions of people died because of his words.

  6. Have you ever heard, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?" Well, that's not true. You can use words you don't mean when you're angry, and tear a relationship apart. You can soothe a crying child with soft words. There are all types of words we can use, and how we use them all depends on us.

  7. No Max and Liesel don't end up together. Liesel dies in the end of the book so they couldn't have been together. I really did think that they would be together in the end, and I really wanted the book to have a good ending with all the dying but that didn't happen. I hope that they could be together in the after life though cause that would be better than during the holocaust.

  8. On the side of destorying you have Hitler giving speaches that got people to do his biding. Hitler was so good at giving speeches that millions of Jews were murdered and Hitler didn't even have to fire one bullet. But on the side of saving you have things like when Leisle is in the basement reading Max's booking when an airrade hits. In this instance her being in the basement reading saved her from being killed. These are just a few examples of the power of words.

  9. I agree that words save lives because in the book, it gives many examples on how it appears. Words can and are able destroy lives of people. One example is that in the beginning of the book, Liesel didn't know how to read. Because of this she was badly teased and looked down upon by her teacher. But words can also save lives in times of need. Toward the end of the book, there was an air strike going through the city. If it had not have been for Liesel reading her book in the basement, it would have been a possibility that she would have been killed.
